Effect of Dry Stoage on the Curvature of Scapa and Recovery From Bending in Gerbera hybrida

Abstract
This study was conducted to confirm the advanced storage and transporting methods for cut gerberas (Gerbera hybrids). the Effects of dry storage periods on the water absorption, changes in fresh weight, and recovery rate from curvature and vase life of cut gerberas were investigated. During the dry storage, temperature was set to 25¡É and relative humidity was 40%. Water absorption increased with increasing dry storage periods. Decrease rate in fresh weight was lower at 24 or 48 hours of storage than the control. The curvature angle after dry storage increased with increasing storage period, and the angle was largest in ¢¥Macho and smallest in ¢¥First-love¢¥ . In ¢¥Princessa¢¥, after 48 hours of dry storage, gerberas was able to be recovered up to 90% against initial curvature angle within 24 hours after holding in vase. The dry storage period could be prolonged up to 72 hours in ¢¥Beauty¢¥, and 96 hours in ¢¥First-love¢¥. But in ¢¥Macho¢¥, curoature could not be recovered even in control. In ¢¥Beauty¢¥, ¢¥Macho¢¥, and ¢¥First-love¢¥, vase life increased after 24 hours storage, and increased after 48 hours storage in ¢¥Princessa¢¥. But there was no significant difference in vase life among storage periods up to 72 hours. As the results, it is possible that storage and transporting time in dry condition might be prolonged up to 48 hours in all cultivars except ¢¥Macho¢¥ because there was no difference in recovery from curvature and vase life among 0, 24, and 48 hours storage.
